For a given set of data, correlation is static, but we commonly recalculate it periodically with a sliding window of data. When we do this, the calculated correlation can change from one day to the next. The shorter the window of data, the more wildly correlation will change over time.<br /><br />As a long-term investor myself, I'm more interested in correlations computed over decades rather than days. My main point is that if two quantities are uncorrelated, it doesn't mean that they have no relationship to each other.<br /><br />For example, if you choose a number uniformly at random between -10 and +10 this number is uncorrelated with its own square. What happens when you have a portfolio of the two stocks in equal proportions and rebalance annually? I bet it's a smoother curve than either stock's and the return will be higher too.
