Short Takes: Bad Tax Software and Model Homes

1. Canadian Financial DIY tested all the CRA certified web-based tax preparation packages and found that they didn’t all give the same answers. Apparently certified doesn’t necessarily mean correct.

2. Big Cajun Man tells us some of the pitfalls of buying a model home.

3. Frugal Trader shows that the stock market is rarely down over long periods of time.

4. Browsing the CRA web site, Preet discovered that the proceeds of crime are taxable.

    "New and improved TaxCheat - we guarantee our software will calculate 30% larger tax refunds than our nearest competitor. If that's not enough, upgrade to TaxCheatPro, and use our new 'choose your own refund' feature."

  4. Hi Michael, I just published the review of the packages and identify some of the errors where I could pin them down. Some are pretty basic like failing to include credits for foreign investment tax paid, despite the number being entered in the correct box on the correct form.
